On May 20th, participants from the first Dishaa Venture will present their models of innovation to leading Indian heart surgeon Dr. Devi Shetty at his office in Narayana Hrudayalaya, Bangalore. This is a follow-up on an intense and experiential event held in January 2011 in Pune when 20 leaders from the UK and 20 leaders from India came together to explore the process of innovation and how to implement systemic change to reduce the cost of heart surgery to $1,000 (USD).

The models include increasing use of mobile technologies to heighten accessibility of healthcare, running operating theatres 24 hours a day, developing mobile operating theatres and ring-fencing a tax on unhealthy consumables for tackling heart disease.

Using heart surgery as the challenge as set by Dr Shetty (a member of the Dishaa Advisory Group), the group looked at how to innovate, the modelling process and prototyping; and now, 4 months later, the models are being presented back to Dr Shetty by the participants for his feedback.

The group will continue to refine and develop their models before releasing a report in September 2011 and presenting this at the next UK-India summit later this year.

"Dishaa enables future leaders to see how much can be gained through links between the UK and India as they set the direction for their lives and careers" says Sudhakar Rao, Former Chief Secretary of the Government of Karnataka and chair of the Dishaa Advisory group.

The next Dishaa course will take place in November 2011 in London with 20 new leaders from the UK and 20 from India. The challenge that will be explored on this course is: Unique carbon cutting measures are happening locally in India and the UK. How can we accelerate and multiply these actions?
